45 AYURVEDIC TEAS Ayurvedic herbs Medicinal plants form the basis of Indian medicine, just like they do in most other alternative medicinal systems. Indian botany has records of more than two thousand types, out of which Ayurveda employs at least eight hundred. Plants that have been used since ancient times include liquorice, ginger, turmeric and aloe vera. Some plants typical in Ayurveda are widely applied elsewhere, too, examples being fennel, liquorice, mugwort, sweet flag, yarrow and ginger, as utilised in Czech folk medicine. This means it is possible to purchase herbs from the Our Herbs range to make Ayurvedic infusions. The Ayurvedic herbal blends listed comprise various herbs and spices that synergistically work together. Ayurveda differentiates between the properties of herbs according to six tastes - sweet, savoury, sour, bitter, spicy and astringent, each one exerting a certain effect on the body. For example, a spicy taste has a warming effect, encouraging one’s internal organism to burn more energy and break down fats; obvious examples of such spicy products are ginger and chilli. A bitter taste lessens the release of digestive juices in the mouth, resulting in a feeling of dryness and reduction in appetite; bitter plants include nettle, lemon grass and hops. Astringency in flavour calms the mucosae of the digestive tract, inhibits a sense of hunger, discourages water retention and has an antiseptic effect; examples of such plants are fennel, apples, pears, blackberries and rosehips.
